What is Sunday School? Sunday School has a heritage of over 200 years. It has been an important part of Southern Baptist churches for more than 100 years and West Saint Charles Baptist Church since it’s founding. Because of this lengthy heritage, you may be wondering what this "relic of the past" has to offer churches and people of the third millenium. I am glad to say that the Sunday School has much to offer us, individually and as a church family.However, as a church, we are developing a new way of thinking about Sunday School in order to tap its vitality for a new day. So, what is new about Sunday School for a new century? Sunday School is a strategy. It is not a program we are attaching to an already overcrowded church schedule. It is not an organization we are trying to grow or perpetuate. Sunday School is a strategy, a plan, a way for the church to do the work of the Great Commission.Sunday School is the church doing its work. Sunday School does not have tasks or work to do apart from that which belongs to the church. The focus is on the five functions of the church: evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry and worship.Sunday School is the church doing its work in the context of small groups. The church gathers weekly in a large group for worship and praise. Sunday School is the church gathering in small groups where the work of the church becomes more focused and personal.Sunday School is a seven-day-a-week strategy, not a one-day-a-week meeting. The effectiveness of Sunday School as a strategy is organizing, equipping and mobilizing members to live obediently as believers in their situations in life.Sunday School has two objectives: (1) to lead people to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and (2) to build Great Commission Christians. Through Sunday School classes, people can be brought into an encounter with God’s Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.Through our Sunday School program we can help each other become all that God wants us to be.
