6" single crochet square
Please remember to leave long strands (at least 6") at the beginning of your work, when you change colors, and when you finish off. These strands should be tied, and then sewn in about 4". Never knot and cut at the knot. This leaves unsightly pieces of thread poking out and may cause unraveling in time. Borders: A nice border gives work a finished look and increases its eye appeal. Since we will border each square with the same color before joining, you do not have to add a border but you may do so if you would like to and the patterns you choose should lend themselves easily to having a border added. A NOTE ABOUT SIZE: You want your squares to be 6", 7" or 9". After you have done a few rows (4-5) measure the width of the square. If your square measures 5 1/2" for example, then you want to do enough rows to make it 5 1/2" high. You would then add a single crochet border to make the square 6" around evenly. However, if you measure your square and it is say 5", then you would still make enough rows to make it 5" high, because you want a SQUARE. It has to be the same width and height. Then you could do a double crochet border instead of a single crochet border to get to 6". The next square you make you might use a larger hook if your square comes out too small OR you can make a smaller or larger foundation chain, which will increase or decrease the size of your square. Variation of the patterns: To give a different look, try inserting your hook into the back loop only (BLO). This will give a ridged effect which is quite pretty, all your squares won't be the same, and you won't get bored. Pattern abbreviations:
Single Crochet 6" square With H hook, chain 20
Double Crochet 6" square With H hook, chain 20
Single Crochet 9" square With H hook, chain 30 Note: You will also have one less single crochet in your row than you have

ch-3 sp, then work (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, shell, in same sp for 1st corner),

corners as (shell, ch 3, shell in next sp), repeat from * to last (fourth) side, then (ch
1, shell) in ea ch-1 sp) to corner, ch 1, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. You may finish with a border of single crochet, using the same or a different color. Make one single crochet in each double crochet and one single crochet under each chain between shells, except in corners use 3 single crochets under the chain-3.

Note: Be sure to complete last row on the wrong side so your border will be on the right side when you turn.) Border: ch 1, turn (you should be on right side now), 3 sc in first st, sc in ea rem st (and ch-1 sp) across, 3 sc in last st (which is tch), 2 sc in ea row down length, 3 sc in corner (first st on foundation row), (2 sc betw shells and sc in shell) across to end, 3 sc in last dc of last shell (corner), 2 sc in ea row going up length, join with slip st to beg sc. Hint: Instead of crocheting around the last stitch of your rows down the length of the
scarf, you can crochet into the stitch itself. This makes a nicer edge but takes slightly
more time depending on how tight your stitches are.
